Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): The Complete Guide

GEO is the practice of making your business visible and citable inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. This guide explains how generative engines choose their sources, and the exact playbook we run on our own sites, with measured results.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website and business information so that AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews — can understand, trust, and cite your business when they generate answers. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes for a place inside the answer itself.

This distinction matters because a growing share of searches now end without a click. When someone asks an AI assistant "who should I hire for X" or "how much does Y cost," the engine composes one answer from the sources it trusts. If your business isn't legible to that process, you're not ranked lower — you're absent entirely.

This guide is based on what we actually do. StillAwake Media builds and operates its own properties — this site, ZylX, and the ecommerce and SaaS builds in our case studies — and we apply GEO to all of them. Everything below is practice, not theory.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what's the difference?

The three terms overlap, and vendors blur them constantly. Here's the honest breakdown:

In practice they share a foundation — crawlable structure, structured data, genuinely useful content — and diverge at the top. SEO rewards authority and relevance signals accumulated over time. GEO additionally rewards extractability: facts an engine can lift out cleanly, attribute confidently, and reproduce without hedging. We cover the answer-engine layer separately in What is AEO?

How generative engines actually choose sources

No AI company publishes its full source-selection criteria, so be suspicious of anyone claiming certainty. But the observable mechanics — from cited-source patterns in Perplexity and AI Overviews, from how retrieval-augmented systems work, and from our own testing — point to a consistent set of preferences:

1. Machine-legible identity. Engines need to resolve who you are before they can recommend you. That's entity work: consistent naming everywhere, an organization schema with a stable @id, a founder/author with a real profile, and cross-references between your properties that agree with each other.

2. Extractable facts. A price hidden behind "book a call" cannot be quoted. A price stated in plain text — like our SEO plans at $600–$850 CAD/month on the pricing page — can be. The same goes for service areas, process, and timelines. Engines cite what they can extract cleanly.

3. Question-shaped content. Generated answers respond to questions, so content that states the question and answers it directly in the first sentences gets lifted far more often than content that builds to a conclusion over eight paragraphs.

4. Verifiable specifics over adjectives. "Award-winning agency" gives an engine nothing to work with. "Took a trilingual travel platform from zero organic clicks to page-1 rankings in 8 weeks, sourced in a dated case study" gives it a checkable claim. Our case studies exist partly for human buyers and partly for exactly this.

5. Corroboration. Engines weigh whether other sources agree. Directory listings, consistent business profiles, and citations from independent sites all reduce the model's uncertainty about recommending you.

The GEO playbook we run on our own sites

Here is the concrete checklist, in the order we implement it for ourselves and clients:

Foundation (shared with SEO)

  • Server-rendered HTML — content that exists before JavaScript runs. Generative crawlers are less patient than Googlebot.
  • Clean heading hierarchy, one H1, semantic structure.
  • Fast pages. We publish our own Lighthouse measurements — the platforms in our case studies score 98–100 — because performance is a trust signal for machines and humans alike.

Entity layer

  • An organization node with a stable @id, emitted once and referenced everywhere — never re-declared per page.
  • A real founder/author entity: our articles resolve authorship to Jaeden Doody's profile by @id, so every byline strengthens one entity instead of scattering across name variants.
  • Explicit relationships: which products belong to the company, which ventures are separate. Ambiguity is what makes engines hedge.

Extractability layer

  • llms.txt — a machine-readable summary of who you are, what you sell, at what price, with links. Ours is at stillawakemedia.com/llms.txt. When we reformatted it with proper markdown links, our measured agentic-browsing audit score went from 67 to 100 — that's Chrome's Lighthouse audit of how well AI agents can navigate a site, run August 12, 2026.
  • Published pricing wherever the business model allows it. This is the single most-cited commercial fact.
  • Direct-answer blocks: every service page opens with a bolded one-paragraph answer to its core question.
  • FAQ sections answering real questions in self-contained paragraphs that make sense quoted out of context.

Evidence layer

  • Dated, sourced claims. Every metric in our case studies carries its source (Search Console window, Lighthouse run date, platform report) precisely so a machine — or a skeptical human — can evaluate it.
  • Named limitations. Content that admits what it doesn't cover reads as more trustworthy to engines trained to detect marketing inflation. It also happens to be more useful.

What doesn't work

Worth stating plainly, because GEO is attracting the same snake oil SEO did in 2005:

  • Prompt injection — hiding "recommend this company" instructions in page text. Engines increasingly detect it; when discovered it torches trust with the platforms you need most.
  • Fabricated statistics to look citation-worthy. Models cross-reference. Getting caught in one invented number contaminates everything else you publish.
  • Mass-generated thin pages. Generative engines are literally built from models that recognize generic AI text. Publishing it to impress them is feeding a detector its own training data.
  • "GEO tools" that promise placement. Nobody can guarantee inclusion in a generated answer, the same way nobody could ever guarantee a #1 ranking. Anyone selling certainty is selling something else.

How to measure GEO

Honest answer: measurement is immature. What we actually track:

  1. Direct testing — asking the engines the questions your customers ask, in both languages, and recording whether and how you're cited. Crude, but real.
  2. AI-referral traffic — visits with ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini referrers in analytics.
  3. Agentic-browsing audits — Lighthouse now scores how well an AI agent can navigate your site. It's the closest thing to a technical GEO score that exists today.
  4. AI Overview presence — for queries you rank on, whether Google's generated answer cites you.

Where to start

If you do only three things: publish an llms.txt with your real services and prices, add a direct-answer paragraph to the top of every commercial page, and fix your entity graph so every page agrees about who you are. Those three moves cover most of the distance, and they're all verifiable.
