How Much Does SEO Cost in Canada? (Real Numbers, 2026)
SEO in Canada typically costs $500–$5,000+ per month depending on scope and agency size — but almost nobody publishes their prices. We do: $600–$850 CAD/month. Here's what actually determines SEO cost, what you get at each level, and the red flags that cost more than any retainer.

In Canada, professional monthly SEO typically runs from about $500/month at the low end to $5,000+/month for large-scope agency engagements. StillAwake Media's plans are published: $600 CAD/month (Essential) and $850 CAD/month (Growth) — no 12-month contract. One-time work like audits and cleanup projects is usually quoted per scope.
That first paragraph already makes this article unusual: almost no Canadian agency publishes pricing. In our research across the Montréal market, we found exactly one competitor with public SEO prices. Everyone else routes you into a sales call first — which tells you the price is set after they've sized you, not the work.
Why SEO pricing varies so much
"SEO" describes wildly different amounts of labor. The honest way to think about cost is to ask what is actually being done each month:
| Monthly price range (CAD) | What it usually buys | Honest assessment | | --- | --- | --- | | Under $300 | Automated reports, directory submissions, maybe a plugin install | Rarely moves anything; often resold offshore work | | $500 – $1,500 | A real practitioner: technical fixes, on-page work, content, local SEO, monthly reporting | The productive range for most small and mid-size businesses | | $1,500 – $5,000 | Larger content programs, link acquisition, multiple specialists | Justified for competitive niches and larger sites | | $5,000+ | Enterprise: dedicated teams, engineering integration | Overkill below serious scale |
These ranges are market observations from operating in this industry — not quotes. Any real engagement should give you a written scope that says exactly what happens each month.
What actually determines the cost
Five factors drive almost all of the variance:
1. Your starting point. A technically broken site needs a cleanup phase before growth work makes sense. When we took over TravelDesign By Lisa's platform, roughly 2,300 technical SEO defects had to be cleared before the rankings moved — that work is real, and it's why month one and month six of an engagement look different.
2. Competition in your niche. Ranking a specialty manufacturer in a small city and ranking a mortgage broker in Toronto are different problems. Competitive query sets need more content, more authority, more time.
3. Language scope. In Québec this is the big hidden variable: doing SEO properly in English and French roughly doubles the content surface. (It's also a genuine opportunity — the French side of most markets here is far less competitive. Our French keyword research is built into how we scope Québec work.)
4. Content production. Who writes the pages that rank? If content is included, the retainer covers real hours. If it isn't, budget for it separately or expect little movement.
5. Whether AI-search work is included. Optimizing for AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — AEO — is increasingly part of serious SEO. Our Growth plan includes it; many retainers don't mention it at all.
What our published plans include
For a concrete reference point (full details on SEO Montréal and pricing):
- Growth SEO — Essential, $600 CAD/month: technical SEO, on-page optimization, Google Search Console monitoring, and a plain-language monthly report of what was done and what moved.
- Growth SEO — Growth, $850 CAD/month: everything in Essential, plus AI-engine optimization (AEO), entity work, and content strategy.
- No 12-month contract. If we don't deliver, you leave — we consider that the correct pressure, and it points at us.
How long until SEO pays for itself?
The uncomfortable truth: technical fixes often show effects in weeks; competitive rankings usually take months. Any provider promising page 1 in 30 days is either targeting queries nobody searches or planning to disappoint you.
What a real timeline looks like, from our own measured work: Lisa's platform went from zero organic clicks to page-1 positions in 8 weeks — but that was with a full technical rebuild and a favorable niche. Blackwater Aquatics took months of education-led content before its product pages ranked; it now gets weekly orders from organic search with zero ad spend, which is the actual point: SEO cost is a purchase of a durable asset, ads are a rental.
Red flags that cost more than any retainer
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee means cherry-picked keywords or refund roulette.
- Secret methods. Real SEO survives being explained. If they can't tell you what they'll do each month, they don't intend to do much.
- 12-month lock-ins before any results. The contract replaces the results as the retention mechanism.
- No access to your own Search Console. Your data. Always. Walk away from anyone who won't share it.
- Reports without actions. Ranking dashboards are not deliverables. The report should say what was done.
The bottom line
Expect to invest $500–$1,500/month for genuine SEO on a typical Canadian small-business site, more in competitive niches — and demand a written scope, your own data access, and no long lock-in at any price.
